In my head Pyro is a total hippie.
Here's why.

Once upon a time Saxton Hale was about to leap out of his fifth story office window and beat the ever loving shit out of some protesting hippies when he was struck with a (somewhat) brilliant plan. Instead of brutally murdering them he could turn all those soft mindless hippies into hardened (though equally mindless) killing machines! Then he could set up a mail order mercenary service and make millions! And if that didn’t pan out, at least there’d be a lot less hippies outside his office. So Saxton Hale beat the hippies into unconsciousness and had the top Australian scientists get to work on them. However brainwashing hippies and giving them super powers turned out to not work so well… at least not for the hippies. The only one who survived turned out to be [REDACTED], who had been given the power of pyrokinetics. Sadly the brain washing stage seemed to be a bit glitchy. [REDACTED] was even more of a tree hugging, flower loving, granola munching moron, except now he was also a delusional pyromaniac to boot. Figuring “waste not want not” Hale cloned the screwy little bastard and sold the two of them to Redmond and Blutarch Mann. And that’s the origin of The Pyro. The End

A hippie? Sure, he's a free spirit in his own mind, but a hippie? That would be unexpected... and the soldier certainly wouldn't stand for it.
